My Experience

I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from ASU where I also went to law school.

While I was in law school I was a member of ASU’s prestigious National Moot Court team. I had many, many moot court honors culminating in being granted membership to the prestigious Order of Barristers, an award for excellence in the courtroom.

Also while in law school, I was offered an internship with the office of Senator John McCain which I politely declined so I could court my sweetheart and now wife, Maile. I did not, however, turn down an offer for a writing internship at the venerable law firm of Lewis and Roca. “Lewis and Roca” may not sound familiar to you but I’m sure you’re familiar with your Miranda Rights.

The late John P. Frank spent his entire career at Lewis and Roca and was the attorney who represented Ernesto Miranda in the case that created the now-famous Miranda Rights.

After law school I clerked for Judge Roger W. Kaufman, the presiding Criminal Judge of Maricopa County Superior Court. The Presiding Criminal Judge oversees the administration of all judges in Maricopa County dealing with criminal matters. As his clerk I made many valuable contacts and connections which benefit my clients today. Also, I did a tremendous amount of research and writing in all facets of criminal law.

I then went to work as a prosecutor for the City of Phoenix. I worked on literally thousands of DUI cases and did well over 100 jury trials.

I enjoyed trial work so much that it was not at all unusual for other prosecutors to bring me their difficult cases. During my time at the city, I often sat second chair in trial to law students taking their first steps in the courtroom trial setting – that was “interesting,” to say the least.

I loved working as a prosecutor generally but often felt sympathy for the folks I was prosecuting. More often than not they were just ordinary folks who made mistakes. It didn’t take me long to realize that I would be more comfortable defending them than prosecuting so I resigned.

And the rest is history. I went to work for the firm of Black & Portney handling all of their criminal defense matters and eventually left to start my own practice where I was awarded a contract by the City of Phoenix to take cases as a public defender in addition to my private cases. It’s difficult to guess how many cases I’ve handled; hundreds for sure and probably thousands.

Bottom line for you, I have more than enough experience to handle your case knowledgeably and expertly.
